The Role of Sun Protection in Skin Biology – What Does Science Know Today?
Sunlight is a fundamental condition of life. It plays a role in regulating the circadian rhythm, shaping our well-being, and synthesizing vitamin D, among other things. However, solar radiation also contains ultraviolet (UV) components that, in cases of excessive or repeated exposure, can induce biological changes in the skin.
One of the most researched areas of skin biology is the study of the relationship between UV radiation and the skin. Based on research from recent decades, we now know of numerous cellular-level mechanisms that contribute to long-term changes in the skin’s structure and function.
UV Radiation is Not Uniform
The ultraviolet range of sunlight is primarily composed of UVA and UVB radiation.
UVB primarily exerts its effects in the upper layers of the skin and plays a significant role in the development of sunburn. UVA reaches the deeper layers of the skin in a greater proportion, where it can influence various cellular processes.
Both types of radiation affect the skin through different mechanisms, which is why research examines their biological roles separately.
What Happens in the Cells?
Exposure to UV radiation can increase the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the skin. Oxidative stress can affect cell function and initiate signaling pathways that play a role in the remodeling of the collagen and elastin network.
According to research, these processes can be linked to biological changes associated with skin aging. However, the extent of this process is influenced by several factors, including the duration and intensity of exposure, skin type, and individual biological characteristics.
The Skin’s Natural Defense Capacity
The skin possesses its own antioxidant systems, pigmentation mechanisms, and DNA repair processes. These continuously contribute to adaptation against everyday environmental impacts.
However, if UV exposure persistently or repeatedly exceeds the skin’s natural defense capacity, these mechanisms gradually become less capable of counteracting cellular damage.
Why is Sun Protection Important?
Based on current scientific evidence, exposure to excessive ultraviolet radiation is one of the best-known external factors that can contribute to premature skin aging, the development of pigmentation irregularities, and DNA damage.
Therefore, sun protection is a fundamental element of modern skincare. However, choosing the right sun protection strategy can depend on many factors, such as individual skin type, geographic location, the season, the time of day, time spent outdoors, and lifestyle.

Today, science views sun protection not as a single solution, but as a complex approach. This can include behavioral habits, considering the intensity of solar radiation, seeking shade, wearing appropriate clothing, and—depending on the given situation—applying sunscreen products.

The Anatomy of Sleep Wrinkles: The Skin’s Nighttime Biomechanics and Circadian Rhythm
While dermatological research has focused for decades on UV radiation and gravity, modern Western clinical medicine now pays significant attention to the skin’s nocturnal behavior. During the 7-8 hours of sleep, facial skin undergoes unique biomechanical and physiological changes that lead to clinically verifiable structural deformations—commonly known as sleep creases.
Skin Viscoelasticity and Sustained Compression
Clinical biology defines the skin as a viscoelastic tissue, capable of absorbing mechanical stress in the short term, but subject to permanent deformation in the extracellular matrix (ECM) under sustained pressure. During lateral or prone sleep positions, static pressure and shear forces exerted on facial tissues disrupt the structure over several hours. The collagen and elastin fibers suffer micro-damage from continuous compression, leading over time to the weakening of the dermal network and the permanence of characteristic vertical creases.
The Skin’s Circadian Rhythm and Increased Permeability
Recent chronomolecular research proves that the skin responds to the circadian (daily) rhythm at a cellular level. At night, cell proliferation (cell division) accelerates; however, simultaneously, the skin’s barrier function weakens significantly. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) reaches its peak during the nocturnal hours. A clinically dehydrated stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the epidermis) is much less capable of absorbing mechanical stress, allowing physical creases to damage the tissues more deeply.
Hemodynamics and Transient Nocturnal Edema
In a horizontal position, the dynamics of lymphatic drainage and microcirculation change. Interstitial fluid can accumulate in the facial connective tissues overnight (transient edema). This localized fluid retention physically stretches the skin, placing additional strain on elastic fibers and contributing to the increased visibility of compression wrinkles in the hours following awakening.
